MARICOLEN MALDEGEM:  LEADING INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

The Maricolen Institute is a secondary school for general as well as  technical and professional education. The school is located in the centre of Maldegem, a community of more than 20 000 inhabitants, located between Brugge and Gent. Maricolen Maldegem is a school in a semi-rural environment. The school’s mission is: ‘Bring out the best in each other’. Number of students:  about 700. About 550 students are enrolled in general education; about 150 students are enrolled in vocational education (technical and professional). Number of staff: 90 (headmasters, coordinators, teachers, educational staff and administration). Since 2016 the school is a LEADING INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL. We are applying to become a Golden Erasmus Leading School in 2022.

Erasmus students visiting Maricolen Maldegem On 21st March Maricolen Maldegem welcomed four Erasmus students who are studying in Ghent: Louison from France, Holly from Ireland, Lina and Katherina from Germany. During our language classes they told us about the many benefits of studying abroad and shared experiences, tips and tricks.

January 20:  Erasmus+ Multicultural learning in a semirural environment. Project Meeting with our partner: Liceo and municipality of Mazara del Vallo . 

 february 2020:  Final meeting in Mazara del Vallo (Sicily) of project Erasmus+ KA101 ‘multiculturality’.

February 20: Erasmus+How To Make STEAM Literacy A Reality For All Students. Students exchange and training in  Manchester (UK)  with partners from Manchester (UK), Finspang (Sweden), Lourinha (Portugal), Samsun (Turkey) and Daugavpils (Latvia).

March 20: Erasmus+ VET Students of vocational education did a two- week internship in the healthcare sector in Amsterdam.

In November 2021, we received the result of our project KA201 The Leader in Me (www.studentleadership.eu). The project is among the 10% best projects and has received the label ‘good practice ‘ from the European Commission. In December 2021, we had partners from Portugal and Turkey visit us in the context of our pollution project.  There was an online meeting with the other partners.

In December 2021 we received a 5 year accreditation and in January 2022 the coordinator made preparatory visits to schools in Naples and Sicily

In january 2022 mr. Vanden Driessche and mr. Remmerie visited the Gymnazija Vic school in Ljubljana to learn about their scientific projects. 

During the spring break 2022, a group of staff visited the school Dene Magna near Gloucester (UK) in an Erasmus project KA101. They learned how to give young people responsibility for their learning and lives.

In March 2022 young people from Ljubljana, Szczecin and Vila-real came to visit Maldegem. They worked on the school’s butterfly project and visited Ghent. (Pollution project)

From 6 to 19 March 2022, the pupils of Organisatiehulp and three teachers went to Amsterdam for a vocational traineeship.

In April 2022, three students and two supervisors went to Finspang in Sweden. The aim was to learn how young people work with robotics at the Nicolin High School. (STEAM project)

At the end of April 2022, a group of students and supervisors went to Vila-real, Spain. They investigated microplastics from a sailing boat on the Mediterranean Sea (POLLUTION project).

Three teachers went with a group from Katholiek Onderwijs Vlaanderen to Denmark and Ireland (Cork) in April-May 2022 to learn how to teach citizenship at school.

From 8 to 14 May 2022, a group of ten pupils and two teachers from Szczutowo, central Poland, came to learn how we teach young people foreign languages in our CLIL lessons.

Three pupils and two tutors visited the secondary school in Lourinha (Portugal) in May 2022 as part of the STEAM project.

In October 2022, four students and two tutors went to Salerno for a short leadership training. 

“En octubre 2022, 2 profesoras españolas vinieron a Maldegem para ver cómo organizamos las clases de CLIL. También dieron una clase a nuestros alumnos de español. ¡Fue una experiencia inolvidable!”

En novembre 2022, quatre élèves et deux professeurs ont participé au projet « Uni.e.s. dans la diversité » à Munich, en Allemagne.
